Championship best performances were the order of the day at the Cambridgeshire Athletic Association Athletics Championships in Cambridge.

After the interruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Championships returned to their traditional date in May, and it was a busy schedule at Wilberforce Road.

Among the best displays on athletics were nine new championship records, including one broken that stood for 43 years.

This was directed by Hunts AC competitor Tom Waterworth.

He ran 1min 56.8s in the men’s under-17 800m, beating the previous mark of 1.57.5 set by Colin Burton of Hunts and Tony Jarman of Peterborough AC in 1979.

This also placed him sixth in the national rankings.

Samuel Clarke triumphed in the men’s 400m hurdles in 52.95, beating Shaftesbury Barnet’s Greg Dunson’s record of 53.8, which was set in 1988.

Jasmine Christmas from Cambridge & Coleridge AC took a
four seconds off the record for the women’s 1500m under-13 championship.

She won in 4.52.47, bettering PAC’s Donna Kelllard mark of 4.56.7, set in 1991.

C&C teammate Leah Wagstaff sprinted into the record books.

Francesca Bush became the fastest runner in the women’s under-13 100m.

The C&C athlete won the final in 13.49, 0.11 faster than Ella Houghton’s best of 13.58 from 2009.

C&C’s Serena Blackwood set a championship record in the women’s under-20 100m.

She clocked 12.39 for the win, dipping under PAC’s Ella De Lucis 2014 time of 12.70.

Hunts AC’s Willow Bedding claimed success in the women’s under-17 hammer with a throw of 49.85m, which added 3.25m to S&N’s L Taylor’s previous record from 2018, and took it moved to second nationally for her age group.
