Can Sevilla keep in touch with the fugitive league leaders?

A fortnight ago, despite a header from Rafa Mir, the Nervionenses were beaten 2-1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

A week later they rebounded by beating Villarreal 1-0 at home with Lucas Ocampos scoring the only goal.

Thus, Julen Lopetegui’s side are still second, but this loss in the capital means that they are eight points behind Real Madrid, but with one game less.

There was then a huge disappointment for Sevilla on Wednesday night as they crashed in the Champions League.

In a game they were due to win, the Hispalenses were beaten 1-0 by RB Salzburg in Austria, with Joan Jordán’s stupid red card not helping the cause.

This means they enter the UEFA Europa League, a competition they have won six times in the last ten times they have participated.

This season’s practical final of the competition takes place at their own Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in May.

So maybe finishing third in Group G was part of the master plan after all.

As for Athletic Club Bilbao, their goal is to return to Europe for the first time since 2017/18.

Last time, Athletic drew 0-0 with Getafe at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, meaning four of their nine away games ended scoreless.

Their only road victory came at Celta de Vigo last August.

Marcelino’s men are now winless in seven league games, with five draws, and are therefore in ninth place, two points below potential European places.

Will the hosts come to life in San Mamés?
