CAA Weekend Preview – April 15, 2022

RICHMOND, Virginia (April 15, 2022) – Spring championships are underway in the Colonial Athletic Association, while some teams prepare for theirs with final tournament tune-ups and post-season racing heats up in other sports.

Golf: The CAA Women’s Golf Championship takes place Friday at St. James’s Reserve Club in Southport, North Carolina. For a full overview, click HERE.

The final week of regular season men’s competition sees Delaware and William & Mary play in the Villanova tournament in Pennsylvania and Drexel and Hofstra visit New Haven for an event at Yale, while James Madison travels to Iowa for the Hawkeye Invitational.

Baseball: The top two teams in the CAA Baseball Rankings face off this weekend at Patriots Point as Charleston entertains William and Mary in a 7-2 championship battle of teams. The Cougars are 17-4 at home, but face a Tribe team that has won 12 of its last 15 games. Delaware, which has won nine of its last 10 games, is heading to Hofstra. UNCW welcomes Towson and Northeastern visits James Madison. Elon has a three-game home streak against state foe UNC Asheville. Weekend schedule

men’s lacrosse: Four of CAA’s six men’s lacrosse competitions have been decided by a single goal, while the biggest margin of victory in conference play so far has been three. A close race is brewing and more entertaining lacrosse is on the way. Towson became the last undefeated team in CAA play, after a 2-0 start. The Tigers will be looking to stay conference perfect on Saturday (12 p.m., FloLive), visiting a hungry Delaware team looking for its first conference win this spring. The second game of the day features a rematch of last season’s CAA Championship game as Hofstra hosts Drexel at 3 p.m. on Lax Sports Network. The final game of the weekend will be a battle of contrasting styles as UMass, the top defense in CAA, hosts the league’s most scoring offense at Fairfield (3:30 p.m., ESPN+). | Weekend schedule

Women’s Lacrosse: A convincing midweek win by Drexel lifted the Dragons to 3-1 in conference as the race to qualify for the CAA Championship and standings heats up. Towson and Hofstra meet on Long Island in a key game (12 p.m., FloLive) with Towson half a game behind Drexel and in possession for the head-to-head tiebreaker. Delaware and Elon will battle at Rudd Field (11 a.m., FloLive) in a showdown with potential championship ramifications and No. 11 James Madison seeks his eighth straight victory when the Dukes visit William & Mary with the tribe aiming for a victory CAA (1 p.m., FloLive) | Weekend schedule

Soft ball : Status quo in CAA softball with four weekend series as we approach the halfway point of conference play. Hofstra and UNCW sit second and third in the conference standings after winning their first three CAA Series this spring. Pride will host the Seahawks this weekend in a key game for conference standings. Delaware has won seven straight conference games, including two straight series, after starting the year 0-2. The Blue Hens are in first place in the CAA and will be looking to continue their hot streak when they visit Towson over the weekend. Fresh off his first CAA Series win, Elon will host Drexel, while JMU and Charleston look to get back on track as the Cougars and Dukes face off in the Lowcountry. | Weekend schedule

Tennis: It’s the last weekend of the men’s tennis regular season and there are two conference matchups on the schedule as Drexel visits Delaware on Friday and then hosts Hofstra on Saturday. William & Mary takes on #64 Old Dominion, UNCW hosts South Carolina State, Hofstra is at home against NJIT, and James Madison hits the road for games against Morgan State and Penn State. The women’s tennis schedule also includes key conference competitions as Drexel visits Delaware and hosts Hofstra, and Charleston entertains UNCW. James Madison challenges No. 34 Old Dominion, Elon meets foe Eastern Carolina State, William & Mary hosts Richmond, Hofstra is at home against NJIT, and Towson takes on Delaware State and Bucknell.

Racetrack: Seven CAA track and field programs will compete in seven different competitions this weekend. Delaware will be at the Larry Ellis Invite, hosted by Princeton, Elon will travel to meet the champions at High Point University, Hofstra and JMU will host home invites, UNCW will travel to South Carolina for the Gamecock Invitational , Northeastern will compete in the Northeast Challenge at UConn and Towson is on the road at the Bison Outdoor Classic, hosted by Bucknell.

Rowing: Five CAA rowing teams will be in action this weekend, three of which will compete against each other. Eastern Michigan, UConn and Villanova will be hosted by Bucknell as the four teams face off on the Susquehanna River. Additionally, Drexel and Northeastern will remain local as the Dragons compete in the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River and the Huskies take on Boston University and Rhode Island on the Charles River.
