Will this be the start of a historic Copa del Rey adventure for Athletic Club Bilbao?

The Lions have lifted the trophy 23 times, only Barca can boast more, although the most recent was in 1984.

Since then, Athletic have lost in the 1985, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2020 and 2021 finals, with the latter pair just a fortnight apart.

But, having hoisted the Supercopa de España just 22 months ago, Athletic fans are hungry for more silverware.

In La Liga, Ernesto Valverde’s side are aiming to qualify for Europe and are well placed to do so.

On Tuesday night, Gorka Guruzeta netted a brace, Dani Vivian also on target, as the Lions hammered Real Valladolid 3-0 at San Mamés.

It will therefore be a huge opportunity for Unión Deportiva Alzira, hosting one of the biggest clubs in Spain.

The Alziristas are aiming to reach the second round of this competition for the first time in 14 years, never going any further than that.

They play their league football in Segunda Federación Group 3, which is part of the fourth tier, but are currently battling relegation.

So anything other than an emphatic win for Athletic at the Estadio Luis Suñer Picó would raise a few eyebrows.
