The Florida State University Board of Trustees created a new direct services organization at its Friday meeting, creating the Florida State University Athletics Association (FSUAA). The Board of Directors approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) jointly developed by the FSU Sports Department and Seminole Boosters, Inc. to improve the alignment, transparency, coordination and effectiveness of the fundraising, operations, marketing and management related to sport.
The FSUAA Board of Directors will be made up of five voting members, including the FSU President as Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Florida State NCAA College Athletics Representative, and the President. of Seminole Boosters, Inc. The Athletic Director will serve as the General Manager (CEO) of the FSUAA and report directly to the University President / Chairman of the FSUAA Board of Directors.
“I am very happy that we were able to accomplish the creation of the FSUAA and I think it will strengthen both Athletics and Seminole Boosters, Inc.,” said Thrasher. “This structure is something that has been talked about at FSU for a long time, and I thank FSU Board Chairman Ed Burr, Booster President Doug Russell, David Coburn and Andy Miller for being creative and wisdom to achieve it. “
“The reorganization of Seminole Boosters and our athletics department will allow FSU to build on the historic success of both organizations,” said Burr. “The creation of the FSUAA will ensure that the priorities, mission and direction of Boosters, Athletics and Administration are aligned.”
The FSUAA will oversee all aspects of the FSU athletics program, approve budgets, strategic plans, develop policies regarding programming, facility funding, prioritization of projects and programs and be responsible for hiring, the evaluation and remuneration of the sports director.
Doug Russell, current President of Seminole Boosters, Inc. thanked President Thrasher and President Burr for their leadership and vision in creating the FSUAA stating that “the new FSUAA will allow Seminole Boosters and athletics to work more closely together to achieve our goals. This is clearly in Florida State University’s long-term best interest.
Andy Miller, President of Seminole Boosters, Inc., also praised the benefits of the new DSO, stating, “I believe we have developed a structure that will respond effectively to future challenges and opportunities.
The MOA reaffirms the governance structure and mission of the Board of Directors of Seminole Boosters, Inc. to lead the fundraising program and manage the assets and income donated and pledged to the company.
To create better alignment and coordination at the staff level, the President / CEO of Seminole Booster, Inc., will report to both the Booster Board of Directors and the Director of Athletics. Additionally, the Athletic Director will sit on several key committees of Seminole Boosters, Inc., including the Finance and Budget Committee, and – along with the University President and FSU Board Chair – will serve on Seminole Boosters, Inc.., Board of Directors and Executive Council.
The proposed changes are expected to be implemented by fall 2019 after approval by the Florida State Board of Directors and Seminole Boosters Board of Directors at their respective fall meetings.
