Syracuse native Joe Stray discovered boxing as a teenager and with a successful career in the ring, when the fighting stopped, a new career began. It’s Joe’s work with others that stands out today.
As the head coach and owner of Joe’s Boxing at Pastime Athletic Club, Joe works with boxers young and old. Joe trains in hourly slots that work with traditional American boxing. Joe has also built a reputation for creating boxing and fitness programs across the country and right here in Syracuse.
âBoxing means a lot of different things to a lot of different people,â he says. “You can still be disciplined and find motivation in boxing that parallels a lot of other things.”
For teens Clover Weitsman and Jack Ide, boxing is a way to learn self defense, understand the basics of the sport, and gain confidence too.
âIt taught me self defense and it’s also great training,â Clover says. And Jack adds, âYou learn to love the sport once you get used to it. “
Anytime of empowerment that will help them achieve their goals inside or outside the ring, he says. “What you put in is what you get out of it.”
