Mohave Community College has just announced another historic milestone in its plan to launch the first-ever men’s and women’s college football teams in Mohave County.

The National Junior College Athletic Association, NJCAA, has informed college president Dr. Stacy Klippenstein that the MCC has been approved to join the association. The college plans to form teams and compete in the Division 1 football season starting in fall 2023.

The BHHS Legacy Foundation is donating $ 300,000 to help the college build men’s and women’s varsity soccer teams. “It’s a very monumental day,” said Dr Klippenstein. “Men’s and women’s soccer at the college level will open new doors to higher education for the benefit of students and the region, and it will add significantly to the overall college experience at MCC. “

The MCC Bighorns will attend the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Other colleges in the conference include Arizona Western College, Cochise College, Eastern Arizona, Yavapai College, Central Arizona College, and many colleges in the Maricopa Community College system.

The men’s and women’s teams will be based at the college’s Bullhead City campus, near the Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse, which will be the home ground for the MCC Bighorns soccer teams.

“What an incredible opportunity for all the kids in Mohave County, these are very exciting times and we are extremely proud to be the future home of Bighorn Soccer. Go bighorns!” Said Fieldhouse General Manager Ed Catalfamo, who will be one of the founding members of the MCC Bighorns Booster Club.

The town of Bullhead City has also donated its facilities to Rotary Park as a replacement for the sports complex. City Manager Toby Cotter is one of many in the area supporting the college effort to create college soccer teams.

“The next level, that’s what I call it, the next level,” Bullhead City Manager Toby Cotter said after hearing the NJCAA approve the college’s application for membership. “Bullhead City has built a culture of sport and sport tourism. College athletics takes us to the next level. The city will work hand in hand with the college to provide facilities when needed and support for tournament fundraising so that the program can be extremely successful. “

The college plans to recruit players from across Mohave County first so that local student-athletes can benefit from both the educational and athletic experience. The college is also planning to host matches and tournaments across the region to help build support for the teams and raise funds for the program.

Several business and education leaders are already forming the Bighorns Booster Club to support soccer teams. The founding members of the recall club will include Mohave Superior Court Judge Steven Moss, Kingman Economic Development Director Bennett Bratley, Baron Services Co-Owner Matt Hanrahan, Fairway Constructors Vice President Mehdi Azarmi, Owner of Superior Tire Kelly Burgess and Anderson Fieldhouse General Manager Ed Catalfamo.
