The Saugus College-High School sports complex will be dedicated at the end of the month in honor of the late Christie Serino Jr.

Selectmen Chairman of the Board, Anthony Cogliano, told the announcer that the grand opening of the Christie Serino Jr. sports complex will take place during the half-time of the Saugus football team’s game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday October 29.

Last spring, members of the municipal assembly voted unanimously to name the state-of-the-art stadium and field adjacent to Saugus High School on Christie Serino Jr. Sports Complex.

Serino, who died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 63, played hockey, baseball and football at Saugus High School. He then trained all three sports in his alma mater.

A member of the Saugus High School Sports Hall of Fame, Serino became an outstanding player in hockey, basketball and football at American International College.

Known as one of Saugus’ top athletes, Serino played a key role in the development of Saugus Youth and Recreation department programming in the 1970s and was a popular English teacher at the school. Intermediate Belmonte and a physical education teacher at Saugus High School.

The Oct. 29 soccer game against Winthrop works well as a dedication date, in part because Serino’s son Matt is the athletic director of Winthrop High School, Cogliano said.
