Dominic Suozzi was appointed COO of the Peaks Athletic Club in February and, starting last week, he launched a massive project to rejuvenate the local gym.

“We’re out of the pandemic and we’re on to bigger and better things,” Suozzi said. “This gym has been around for 12 or 13 years at this location, but we’ve been there since 2002. So we’re almost 20 years old here at Fountain Hills.”

Suozzi said he and his staff are planning a big event to celebrate two decades of activity but, for now, the focus is on Phase 1 of a massive overhaul of Peaks’ facilities.

Phase 1 includes the construction of a new outdoor training space. The pitch erupted over this project last weekend.

The existing outdoor training area is approximately 1,000 square feet. This new area will be at least six times the size.

“This is just the start of what we have as a four year plan,” Suozzi explained. “This place will look completely new when we’re done with it.”

As for the new outdoor space, it will be walled up and will have 50 percent grass, 50 percent rubber flooring. A metal roof will eventually be added, protecting from the elements while maintaining the outdoor training experience.

“So the new patio is phase 1 and the roof placement will be phase 2,” Suozzi said. “Phase 3 will consist of closing our existing patio and transforming it into a new space for our gym. “

Many more projects are planned over the next four years, including upgrading the swimming pool so that it can be heated and used year round. The bathrooms will also be redone, as well as the sauna, hammam and aerobics room. New air conditioning units will be installed, new equipment will be added to the gymnasium and a new coat of paint will help complete the transition. An enlarged car park is also planned.

“When I say the place gets a makeover, I mean we get a whole new look,” Suozzi said. “We’ve been here for a while now and the city knows what to expect. If we want to stay here for another 20 to 40 years, it has to be new and fresh. People need to see that we are putting Peaks back to work and making improvements on every level for our customers… We need to be bigger, better and more efficient. This facility is great the way it is, but we can always be better.

Initial construction of the new outdoor training area is expected to be completed in December. Many plate training equipment will be available for those who wish to train in the great outdoors.

“It will offer a bit of everything and give our members a suitable outdoor training option,” said Suozzi. “… This is the new Peaks Athletic Club that we have all been waiting for and hoping for. All of these projects will take time and there will be a few stumbles along the way, but I think [Peaks] is finally in a place where he can grow and show his full potential.
