It was all-out from the start at Son Moix and Athletic’s Raul Garcia might have done better on 10 minutes when he came through Oihan Sancet.
But it was the home side who were the first to strike, taking the lead through Sevilla’s penalty after Pablo Maffeo was knocked down.
And one became two in half an hour, with Rodriguez finishing well to give Athletic a mountain to climb.
But they set about doing just that at the start of the second half, making a double change that saw Yuri Berchiche and Berenguer come on.
And on time they had found a way back into the game, with Garcia providing the goal.
Suddenly the momentum had changed and substitute Berenguer netted an equalizer just two minutes later, gathering an inbound corner.
It looked like the spoils would be split, but Athletic pulled away from a late corner to let Los Bermellones in.
FIORENTINA SEE OFF SPEZIA
In Italy, the only match of the evening in Serie A saw Fiorentina beat Spezia at the Stadio Alberto Picco.
Thiago Motta’s hosts have been in fine form of late, claiming four wins in their last six games – including a 2-1 away win against AC Milan on January 17 – to ease their relegation worries, but they fell behind just before halftime. to Krzysztof Piatek’s close finish.
Piatek really should have given his side the lead in the 14th minute but saw his penalty hit the post.
Kevin Agudelo found an equalizer for the home side after capitalizing on an error by Sofyan Amrabat, but it was Amrabat who had the last laugh as he moved forward before striking home to give his side the win one minute from time.
