Hanoi (VNA) – from Vietnam
sports team ranked high in the last two consecutive SEA Games, and the members are determined to defend their leadership position in the sport in the ongoing competitions 31st Southeast Asian Games in the countryside.

At the 29 SEA Games held in Malaysia in 2017, the team got up to 17 Gold medals for the first time in the history of the regional sporting event, nearly doubling Thailand’s result, although the initial target was set at around 10-12 gold medals.

Two years later, track and field athletes from Vietnam won 16 gold, 13 silver and nine bronze medals, retaining their top spot in the medal table at SEA Games 30 in the Philippines.

Vietnam is aiming for 15 to 17 gold medals among the 47 sports medal series at SEA Games 31, which experts have described as not easy but still achievable.

Nguyen Thi Oanh, Dinh Thi Bich, Khuat Phuong Anh and Tran Nhat Hoang are the country’s “golden” hopes this time around. Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s 400m, 800m and 1,500m races, men’s and women’s relays and marathon are the categories in which Vietnam is strong and capable of winning gold medals.

The biggest regret is that Le Tu Chinh is excluded from the WED Games 31 by injuries, a considerable loss for the host country in the women’s 100m and 200m races and the 4x100m relay. She had bagged four gold medals at the previous two Games.

The sporting events will take place at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi from May 14 to 19./.
