Tavistock Athletic Club compete in tough cross-country races in penultimate game
Tavistock Athletic Club took part in the penultimate Westward League cross country match of their season last Sunday.
Leaving Tavistock in torrential rain, all athletes and spectators were greatly relieved that the skies had cleared upon their arrival in Redruth. However, the rain had made the course incredibly muddy. Combined with steep hills, this made for some tough racing!
The under 11s ran first. Zoe Bigham won. It was her third win of the season and as a result she won the league with one race to spare. Congratulations Zoe!
Then come the older ladies. The TAC teams (seniors and veterans) were second in this game. Led at home by Charlotte Walker, closely followed by Nikki Kelly and backed by a few quick and determined teammates, the ladies did everything they could to hold onto those positions against some very good Cornish sides.
One of the highlights of the season for TAC was the number of girls under 13 who raced. They were again able to field two full teams. The girls have raced well all year and are supporting each other beautifully.
Kudos must also go to Connor and Noah who were the only TAC runners in their races. Both have competed in all five Westward League races this year and with their commitment they will no doubt continue to improve.
A strong start by Ian Duffin and another excellent run by Martin Exley-Deane were the highlights for the TAC men’s team.
The final game of the season will take place at Plymouth on Sunday 27 February. The Girls Under-13 and both women’s teams are hoping to retain their second-place finish in the league. Individuals will also attempt to win medals in their age categories. Most athletes also hope for a drier and less muddy course!
