John Driscoll has been awarded for his work with the West Cheshire Athletic Club and the sport of athletics.

Members of his club gathered to thank John for his many years of service to athletics following the final round of the Borders Road Running League.

John received books on two of his non-sporting interests – folk music and architecture – and a restaurant voucher with which to celebrate his and his wife’s upcoming birthdays.

“John has been instrumental in West Cheshire AC and its previous incarnations since moving to the Ellesmere Port area 55 years ago, and has officiated and produced statistical data at county, regional, national and international level “said club chairman Mark Duffey.

“His array of support for athletics is particularly impressive, whether refereeing at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, recording positions and finishes in all weathers, or helping to setting up courses for local events, he was also instrumental in forming the Borders Road Race League.

“John has a particular talent for statistics, whether it’s devising the devilishly clever handicapping system used by the Endurance League or analyzing trends in the athletics of Cheshire clubs. He currently analyzes the best national and world performances across multiple events, with the aim of demonstrating how performance figures at elite level vary over time – information that really should find its way into the wider world of athletics somewhere!

“In short, John combines great analytical talent, down-to-earth application and a genuine interest in athletics – he is always very approachable and encouraging.”

Debra Bemand won the women’s Endurance League competition, ahead of second-placed Alex Duffey and third-placed Keely Smith, while Andy Carter won the men’s competition, with runner-up Steve Fernyhough and third-place finisher Andrew Clague.
